A Malaga dagger and sheath

An 18th-century Spanish Malaga dagger - SOLD

An eighteenth-century dagger or knife from southern Spain, specifically the city of Malaga. These knives are very similar to other Spanish knives from Albacete and the Canary islands, especially in their hilt design.

This example is unfortunately missing one half of the engraved brass sheet covering its hilt. The hilt is secure, but rotates around the tang a little bit, something which is not unexpected given its construction and age. The single-edged blade is decorated with engraving and brass inlay down each side. It has a few small corrosion spots and very slight bend right at the very tip. The brass scabbard is decorated with engraved foliate scrollwork, and also has a slight bend at the tip as well as a small split along the edge at the top. The blade still sits securely in the scabbard with no rattling or movement.

Blade length: 23 cm

Overall length: 33 cm

Length in scabbard: 34 cm

Late 18th - early 19th century
